Sierra couldn’t sleep all night, tossing and turning. She had always thought she would have at least an inkling if something in her and Gavin’s relationship was about to change. Being completely clueless about him considering marriage truly worried her. She had believed they were in sync more than ever. Well, besides that whole thing of her fighting Bahadur anyways. But clearly, she had been wrong. Finding the ring had thrown her for a loop. She loved Gavin. She wanted to be with him. But she wasn’t ready to consider marriage. She was too young, too inexperienced.

I thought it was perfect for you. Gavin’s words reverberated in her mind, making the corners of her lips tug upward. The ring was beautiful. She couldn’t have picked a better one herself.

She rolled from her left onto her right side. It would take more than a shiny thing to sway her. Before she could consider a proposal, she needed to talk more to Gavin about what he expected and wanted in his future. Hell, she needed to think more about what her expectations of the future were. Her recent experiences had kept her fully occupied, not allowing for any time to consider her future and what she wanted out of it.

Back when Dad and Gran had been alive and Sierra had been in high school, she had always expected to go to college, work for different businesses in a variety of roles until she found her calling, then one day meet a wonderful man and marry him.

Due to the Culpatus, she had skipped the college part and gone straight to the career part, which had been chosen for her. Working for the regency was meaningful and challenging, and her status as a Fluidus had exposed her to a lot of information and experiences she wouldn’t have gleaned otherwise, but sometimes, as selfish as it sounded, she did worry about missing out on normal things. And she worried that her role was given to her based on her genes. Sure, she worked hard, but at the end of the day, she got to do a lot of things not because she was good at them but because she was a Fluidus. As the only Fluidus around, the regency had to choose her. She didn’t exactly feel accomplished, and sometimes she was certain that anyone would make a better Fluidus than her.

Gavin would train harder than her. Pia with her people skills and razor-sharp mind wouldn’t fall for the traps. With everything Calista had been through, she would have no issues adjusting to powers unique to a Fluidus. Jillian would study hard and uncover the answers that Sierra had failed to detect or was too slow to pick up. Cooper would remain optimistic where she had become dejected. Yes, sometimes she thought all her friends would be better at being a Fluidus than her. This was exactly why she had to succeed against Bahadur. She hadn’t been able to stop her uncle from awakening Bahadur. She had been too slow, too careless, too indecisive, too rash.
